Right then...
So, this will be a new experience. The Z3 has a Harmon K ardon 9 speaker system, of which most of the speakers have rotted foam. The stereo is a bit of a bastard in that the head unit is underpowered and relies on an amp with built in crossovers, so the system uses component speakers most of which are shallow depth. Finding something that fits and will work with the stereo is more expensive than I’d prefer, as is ripping out the stereo and replacing with new (besides I don’t like the look of new head units). So, I’m rebuilding the speakers, and have ordered new foam kits. The last time I did any speaker and stereo work was on my 1971 Ranchero...in 1989.

If it makes you feel any better the portrayal of sound in a car is usually a grand waste of money. Cheaper and without replacing what’s in place is a solid idea.

I did some foam replacement on my grandfather’s McIntoshes (granted, home system cabinets, not car speakers), and it was surprisingly easy. Just make sure you let the glue set for a good 24 hrs before you fiddle with them. Look around for a good foam supplier, if you can’t get factory replacements. For the Mcs, I found someone in Colorado who makes nothing but replacement foam for like every McIntosh from the 60s-90s, it was a perfect fit, and he sent the glue with it.

Who was the foam supplier in CO? I’ve got a set of original Advents that need refoaming.

Oh shit, I’ll have to dig back through emails in 2015. Gimme a few.

no rush! I’ll likely order them, let them sit for a year or two before I get around to it. Advents have needed refoaming for a gazillion years. You guys just reminded me I should get off my butt.

I think he might be a Mcintosh-only supplier, but I’m looking. It was almost 5 years ago.

I did the front B&O door speaker foam on my S8, it went great and was super simple. Just have to make sure you get the cone centered. Good luck, it’s not too bad. Worst part was getting the old foam off.

In a convertible, no less! Yeah, I want something better and the bar is fairly low. Truth be told, if it weren’t for the system configuration, I’d install some Pioneer coax or triax units and be done with it...

Speakerworks.com is who I used, I think. They have a generic by size section too, if they don’t list your specific model.
